Our Objectives

Contributing to an anthropology of urban

Our anthropological approach intends to be in the middle of the territories transformation processes, in order to analyse what all the players make in terms of tools for conceiving them, projecting them and imagining them into the future. It is a matter of contributing to an anthropology able to experiment different ways to keep together several spatial scales (from the detail towards the large territorial scale), temporal ones (situational short timeframes with long term constancies, but also hold together the past, present and future), and narrative ones (individual and collective, as well as interconnecting stories and discourses of inhabitants, designers and decision makers). We want to build an anthropology that can bring a concrete contribution to the manufacture of the urban, and that is pivotal part of the architectural project process.

Contributing to the know-hows of the project phase

Our hypothesis is that the analysis is already a form of project and that different steps of both enrich each other. Thus, through this interaction, the "understanding" and "intervention" on the urban territories transformation are refined. In this perspective, our goal is to strengthen the contribution of the anthropological approach to the architectural, urban and landscape project and to explore possible translations into practice contributing to the criticism of the projects and of the disciplines related to it.

Developing interdisciplinary tools

It is not only a matter of opening to other perspectives and disciplines, but a way to identify, to build and to work a research object in order to develop a common language, capable to relate different disciplines around the research object, overcoming jargons and codes, going towards a wider understanding (on the inside and outside of disciplines and institutions). It is an analytical effort of fineness and "acculturation" of urban knowledge within the public sphere. Often, in our experience, the manufacture of this common language is passing through the establishment and / or development of tools (from mapping to documentary, through interviews, hypertext language of the web, or other forms of investigation) able both to hold together the different looks and to better interact face to the constantly changing circumstances on the field.

Experimenting pedagogies

Teaching in a school of architecture pushes us to tailor the courses through practice and interdisciplinary experimentation as a way to question theories and practices of architecture. Research plays a specific role as an educational tool, while pedagogy becomes a heuristic moment to test a research, sharing with students the questions, fields, approaches and methods.
